Why The Whiskey Smash Checks All The Right Boxes
We're always on the lookout for great summer whiskey cocktails and the Whiskey Smash checks all the right boxes. A classic cocktail from the 1800s, which has seen several revivals over the years, it's refreshing and vibrant, familiar and new. Combining the boldness of whiskey with the brightness of fresh mint and lemon, it falls somewhere between a Mint Julep and a Whiskey Sour, and goes well with both bourbon and rye. It’s easy to make and ideal for outdoor gatherings and is perfect with summer picnic fare or a lazy afternoon on the porch.
Whiskey Smash Ingredients
- 2 oz Bourbon Or Rye
- 1/2 Lemon, Cut Into Wedges
- 3/4 oz Agave Syrup
- 4-6 Fresh Mint Leaves
- Ice
- Mint Sprig For Garnish
How To Make A Whiskey Smash
- In a shaker, muddle the lemon wedges and fresh mint leaves with the agave syrup.
- Fill shaker with ice then add whiskey.
- Shake well until the mixture is well-chilled.
- Strain the cocktail into an ice-filled rocks glass.
- Garnish with mint sprig.
For an extra burst of flavor, gently slap the mint sprig between your hands before using it as a garnish. This releases the essential oils, enhancing the minty aroma and making your Whiskey Smash even more refreshing.
Whiskey Smash Riff
Try a Berry Whiskey Smash for a fruity twist. Muddle a few fresh raspberries or blackberries with the lemon and mint, and follow the rest of the recipe as usual. The berries add a delicious depth of flavor and a beautiful color to the drink.
