Fight Off The Cold Weather Blues With The Death In The Gulf Stream Cocktail

The holiday season has begun which means winter is just around the corner. A vacation to a warm, sun-soaked spot is what you need but if you can’t get away, you can pretend that you did with this recipe. Inspired by Ernest Hemingway's tropical escapes to places like Key West, this cocktail combines the brisk bite of gin and absinthe with a refreshing hint of lime. Crafted by Hemingway’s friend, Charles H. Baker, to suit the author's love for intense flavors, Death in the Gulf Stream is a perfect way to bring a bit of warmth into shorter, chillier days.

Death In The Gulf Stream Ingredients

  • 2 oz Gin
  • 1 oz Fresh Lime Juice
  • 1/2 oz Agave Syrup
  • 1/4 oz Absinthe
  • Club Soda
  • 2 Dashes Angostura Bitters

How To Make Death In The Gulf Stream

  1. Fill a mixing glass with ice and combine gin, lime juice, simple syrup, and absinthe.
  2. Stir until well chilled.
  3. Strain into a tall glass filled with crushed ice.
  4. Top with club soda, leaving a bit of space at the top.
  5. Float two dashes of Angostura bitters over the drink.

A long thin lime peel is the perfect garnish to add a bit more citrus flavor and colorful flare.

Death In The Gulf Stream Riff

For a Caribbean spin, try switching out the gin with white rum and swapping lime juice for grapefruit juice.
